Unity is a worldwide movement founded in 1889 that helps people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles to their daily lives. It is best known for Daily Word, a monthly magazine of inspirational messages that is distributed to about 1 million people in 175 countries.

Since 1994, millions of people have joined in a partnership of prayer during World Day of Prayer vigils held at many of the nearly 900 Unity churches and centers around the world.

Last year, participants offered prayers for an estimated 1.3 million people during the prayer vigil at the Unity world headquarters at Unity Village, Mo. People send the names of friends and family to Unity on prayer lists for this vigil. Each name is read quietly and sacredly during the vigil.

Silent Unity, the transdenominational prayer ministry of Unity, maintains a 24-hour prayer vigil every day of the year and receives more than 2 million letters, telephone calls and Internet requests for prayer annually.

The formula becomes very clear.
1) treat them as your friend and show interest in them as a person.

2) Act like you know what you're talking about.

3) Give them the idea that they are part of something bigger, a cause.

4) Enforce obedience to the group cause.

You can also learn how easy it is for a group leader to abuse the power that is given him.

All the characters in this movie have SOMETHING in them that we can empathize with, even the abusive cult leader.

"Hits" Explained

There seems to be some confusion regarding the terms used to describe website visitor traffic. We usually hear website owners speak in terms of "hits" to their website. Hits don't accurately describe the number of visitors viewing the website – but they are actually just any sort of HTTP request made to your server. Not only are requests made for website pages, but also for all the images and other files associated with viewing a single page. Therefore, one page view could actually result in dozens of hits, and if a single user visits many pages on your website, this visit could generate hundreds or even thousands of hits. This can excite some website owners, but this number is not a reliable indictor of how many people have actually visited the website.

The term that website owners want to focus on is the amount of unique impressions that are generated by their website. A unique impression will measure the number of actual people visiting the website based on their IP address, browser, and operating system. No matter how many "hits" a visitor registers on your website, the server will record her session as one unique visit. Thus, the number of unique visits gives us a much better idea of the amount of traffic the website is generating.

What to Look for When Analyzing Website Traffic

Number of Unique Visitors: We've already determined that the best measure of true website traffic is the number of unique visitors. What we want to look for is a trend in the average number of unique visitors. On a day to day basis, their may be a good amount of volatility in the number of unique visitors, but we want to pay attention to the trend of the average number of visitors per month. Optimally, we'd like to have the number increase on a monthly basis.

Entry Page Statistics: From these statistics we can learn which page people are entering your website. Most visitors will enter from your home page, but you will notice that up to 50% of your website traffic originates from a page other than your home page. It's important that your website have an easy to use navigation structure to ensure that visitors can find the information they are looking for, even if they don't enter through your website's main page.

Bounce Rate: The bounce rate can be defined as the percentage of people who visit your website and immediately leave. Don't get worried if your bounce rate is high – most websites have a bounce rate of about 50% or so. If the bounce rate is unusually high, you can experiment with your website to try and retain more visitors. Maybe you need more enticing graphics, less text, faster loading pages, or a more engaging design.

Exit Page Statistics: These statistics will show you where people are leaving your website. When you know which page is losing the bulk of your website's visitors you can experiment with some changes in an attempt to retain more visitors.

Average Time & Page Views Per Visit: Website visitors are very goal oriented and task driven. Upon visiting your website, most visitors will merely scan the page to quickly determine whether or not it contains the information they are searching for. By analyzing the average amount of time spent on your website and the average number of page views per visit, you can determine how engaging your website's content is. The key to retaining visitors and increasing the number of page views is to have relevant and interesting information your website. Remember – content is king!

Top Referring URLs: This statistic lets you know where the bulk of your website's traffic is coming from. This is important if you're pursuing a website marketing campaign or search engine optimization campaign because you can easily judge the campaign's effectiveness by looking to see how many visitors each marketing method is generating.

Top Search Words & Phrases: This information will let you know which keywords and phrases visitors are searching for in Google and the other search engines in order to find your website. With this information you can gauge the effectiveness of a search engine optimization campaign, or get an idea of how your website's keyword density should be altered to position for the keywords and phrases that you're targeting.

Browsers, Platforms & Screen Sizes: This information gives us some insight as to the type of software and hardware your visitors are using. You should ensure that your website looks the same across all browsers and operating systems. In addition, you must pay attention to the screen size and resolution in which your visitors are viewing your website. The goal is to ensure that no visitor has to resort to the horizontal scrolling bar to view you website – this is a major turnoff for most people.

Country of Origin: A good website stats program will also let you know the geographic region of your website's visitors. This is important if your website only has appeal in a particular region. For instance, if you own a retail store that caters to Southwestern Ontario and you notice that 90% of your website traffic is coming from the U.S., then it can easily be determined that you need to re-think your online marketing strategy.

What would you immediately think of when you met someone with that kind of name? You are also telling people something about your personality if you tell people, "just call me Jon." One name is stuffy and alludes to a rich and formal persona and the other is a fun loving "normal" guy. The name is the first indication of a person's personality. Business names are the first indication of the personality of a business too.

Jonathan Edward Winthrop, III versus Jon. One of these names is equivalent to naming a law firm and the other is the model name for a skate board shop. Think Apple Computers versus IBM. Get it? They are both great computers but one is know as the fun creative computer and one is know as the business computer. Basically they do the same things. So, before you even start picking names, decide on the personality you want your business to project.

Limit The Number Of Decision Makers

Parents are normally limited to two decision makers when picking names. Occasionally a mother-in-law or a "helpful" friend gets involved in the process. A few men I've known left the naming decision completely up to their wives. You normally have two decision makers, at times three or more, and occasionally one. Which do you think is an easier and less painful process? No matter if you are naming a baby or a business; I'll guarantee the one person decision maker is the fastest and easiest path but also might not the perfect solution.

Just like working on a name with your spouse, in business you must find a decision making balance. I would try to get the owner or president, a creative type, and someone with some advertising knowledge involved. In the case of a one person start-up, you wear all those hats anyway, so lucky you, you are back to the one person decision; well unless you want to get your mother-in-law involved. Hey, she may be a creative type.

Don't Be Afraid To Make A Change Or Break Some Rules

Some people change their names when they reach adulthood. While making a change can be a wonderful experience, twenty, or more years of name recognition is lost. Think of all those family reunions where you would have to tell people, "My name used to be..." The same applies for a business. Can you imagine trying to change an established name like Starbucks? Then again, if your parents gave you a name like Hornbuckle, can you imagine not trying to make a change? People pick weird names for their kids and businesses everyday. You're sure to have seen a business name that not even a mother could pronounce.

Sometimes breaking the rules wins the game. A company name like Yahoo doesn't fit my rules, but the company is quite successful. If you choose to go the path of a Yahoo, be prepared to open your wallet and spend big bucks to heavily promote your company name. You will need to create name recognition for a name that means absolutely nothing to the general public.

When you decide to pick a name for your business, think of it like you are naming a child. After all, this growing business is your baby too. Spend a lot of time choosing your company name. If you're lucky, like your kids, your new company name will last longer than you.

Trabajando para alguien. La primera de tipo de negocio que la mayoría de nosotros por lo general entran en en algún momento de nuestras vidas, es conseguir un empleo como empleado de una empresa ya nosotros mismos. What is it? Traffic coming from third party sites (other than search engines) and is a result of a "manual / human" action.

Examples : article directories, social bookmarking services, forums, partners, text link ads, banners, directories, rss...

Pro :

- you control it
- you have a lot of means to develop it (almost unlimited ; a lot are free)
- it's highly targeted
- You can pay to get better targeting and control over your referred traffic
- Long term

Cons :

- Time & resources consuming
- Repetitive tasks

Now, through my membership, my forum, my readings of other forums, I know that most webmasters mainly rely on search engines traffic, our first category.

The aim of the present article is to throw the light on a different angle of the Traffic Generation big box!

Summary : the right way to get into traffic generation is to forget about search engines.

Focusing on search engine traffic gives a too narrow vision of traffic generation. It does not reveal all the opportunities existing outside of the search engines (understand all the way to generate Referred Traffic).

In addition, as you've seen from the cons above, you accept to rely on something you never control, and this is a HUGE risk in your marketing strategy.

Warning : I do not say, you should not care about search engine traffic. I say that it should not be your priority, and the first door you try to open when dealing with traffic generation. It's a question of point of view.

Now, on the other hand, focusing on developing what we called Referred Traffic is a more positive, constructive and profitable attitude and marketing strategy.

Not only will you build traffic for the long term, but you will also "manually" control your traffic, either by submitting your content, your sites, your feeds, or by exchanging links, content, traffic with partners, being active on forums, blogs...

Doing it this way will give you a lot of power and effectiveness. Those sources of Referred Traffic only vanish...if you decide to let them vanish. Once again, you control everything.

Now, you have some positive side effects :

- By building Referred Traffic, you give a lot of food to search engines to index your site, understand them, and rank them well...

- ...thus developing naturally your Search Engine Traffic!

Try to develop Referred Traffic by submitting your sitemap to Google, and you will understand the difference between the 2 approaches :-)

Google and other search engines tend to change their algorithms quite often to produce more relevant content for users of their engines. Sometimes, your site is getting de-indexed in a day just because of this.

Are you lost, is your site dead? It could if you only relied on Search Engine traffic. It has no impact if you focused on building Referred Traffic.

In one case, you feel bad and like if you had wasted your time. In the other case, you don't even notice it (on the long run ; of course, you can see a fall in traffic coming from a given search engine)

But even then, your site has a lot of chances of being re-indexed when you've build Referred Traffic, simply because the search engines food is still there! And this is a HUGE difference and one of the most valuable asset you can develop.

If you're still with me, you should now understand my point : when dealing with bots, you need to act as a human...which means you should not try to talk to them :-) Give them some "bot food" that you build naturally by developing a Referred Traffic Generation Strategy.

Here are 10 easy "pieces" to do what we described above :

Once you have a site...

1) Find some related blogs, read them, identify trends, and post comments (no stupid comments, no spam of course) with a link back to your site where you're also discussing the topic

2) Do the same with related forums. Use search engines (!) to find relevant forums. Register and start being active on these forums. Use your signature to put a link back to your site

3) Create a blog (if you don't have one) and post on a regular basis on it. Use a service like feedburner to syndicate your content with other webmasters.

4) Submit your feeds, blogs, and site to niche directories

5) Find "authority" sites in your niche, analyze them and contact the webmasters to :

a) propose a link exchange (you should first put a link to their site),

You should seriously consider paid traffic. Do not see it as a cost, but rather as an initial investment to boost your site. Also, if your site is correctly monetized, then paid traffic is the easiest way to get some quick metrics about this, and to make it profitable quickly.

As you see we could easily expand this list. But, those are, in my opinion, the most important sources of Referred Traffic.

Now, compare the above list with Search Engine traffic, and you will see why your approach should focus on generating Referred Traffic and not Search Engine Traffic. This type of traffic will come naturally anyway...
